EADS activates latest ATC for the Philippines

EADS Defence & Security paves the way to new generation of civil air traffic control

Toulouse - The Philippines deploys it latest generation radar technology last week built by EADS Defence & Security (DS)

Its aviation authority, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), now operates the air traffic control system according to the most advanced standard.

DS has established the most advanced secondary radar system for air traffic control (ATC) purposes in the Philippines.

The Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar MSSR 2000 I delivered by Integrated Energy Systems & Resources Inc (IESRI) and Defence Electronics, an integrated business unit of DS, has been officially accepted by CAAP.

"Air traffic control authorities all over the world are faced with a continually increasing air traffic density," explained Bernd Wenzler, CEO of Defence Electronics. "This situation requires a high-performance air traffic control system ensuring reliability, easily manageable logistics and comprehensive data exchange."

The surveillance system works in the latest air traffic control Mode S which is an enhancement of existing air traffic control procedures increasing considerably the reliability of air traffic guidance. MSSR 2000 I provides an overview of the air situation based on interrogations, that are in part transmitted in coded form, and automatic replies from the aircraft.

This supplements the information previously supplied by CAAP radars and in this way improves the monitoring of air traffic. Besides, the MSSR 2000 I secondary radar is the first of its kind combining active Mode S interrogations with the passive reception of ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast) reports containing in particular the position of the aircraft, paving the way to a new generation of civil air traffic control. Thus, it increases the performance of the existing ATC equipment by interfacing a secondary radar of the latest generation with legacy multi radar tracking systems of CAAP.

The project was conducted on a very short and tense schedule of less than a year in the replacement of the existing failing equipment. The overall project was accepted by the end-user with the highest level of satisfaction meeting all expectations.

In the field of military flight safety and identification, MSSR 2000 I has been installed on board German naval vessels of the type F122, F123, K130 and S143a. Moreover, the system is being used by the naval armed forces of France, Norway and Finland as well as together with air defence and traffic surveillance radars in such countries as Germany, Portugal, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Malaysia.

The MSSR 2000 I is the only civil/military qualified Mode-S enhanced surveillance secondary radar in the world offering Mode-5 and ADS-B capabilities. Therefore from the logistic point of view, the employment of MSSR 2000 I DR system offers significant commonality savings.
