Air Force to buy new six trainer jets

For F-16 or F-18 MRF aircraft

July 3, 2011

The Philippine Air Force will have new six trainer jet fighters for interdiction missions against intruders into Philippine waters and air space, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said Friday at the Air Force’s 64th anniversary celebrations.

The marching orders to acquire immediately new trainers came from President Benigno Aquino after Russian made Chinese SU-27 intruded into Philippine Airspace and harassed two PAF aircraft that were conducting reconnaissance patrol and another oil exploration team at least nine times off Palawan region.

A team from the Philippine Air Force recommended an initial six multi-role planes to be acquired within the term of President Benigno Aquino III says Armed Forces chief Gen. Eduardo Oban Jr. The PAF will use it as advanced lead-in fighter trainer (LIFT).

He said the Air Force was looking at either Korea’s TA-50 Golden Eagle or Italy’s M-346, to be bidded out next year.

The TA-50 is a joint venture program of Korea Aerospace Industrie (KAI) and Lockheed Martin of the United States, with a price tag of USD $25 million, close to the F-16C/D variants valued at USD $27 million from US Air Force stocks. A brand new F-16 cost USD $55 million. The TA-50 Golden Eagle design was largely derived from the Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon, being similar on the use of a single engine, speed, size, cost, and the range of weapons system.

Meanwhile, the Italian made Alenia Aermacchi M-346 of the Finmeccanica Group is a twin engine, two seat aircraft, a derivative of the Russian Yakovlev Yak-130. It has a price tag of USD$20 million.

The Aermacchi M-346 has a “Fly Away” price tag of about USD $15 million per plane, while the TA-50 settles at USD $21 million based on Singapore and Indonesia offer.

The T-50 and M-346 are considered to be among the best advanced trainer jets on the global market. Both Singapore and the UAE bought the M-346 for their training needs while Indonesia opted for the T-50.

The trainer aircraft is intended to ensure pilots to be properly trained to fly new generation fighters like the F-16 or F-18.

Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario met with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton last week to discuss military deals with US surplus hardware which include a fighter aircraft affordable to the Philippines.

Industry insider at the Department of Defense quoted the aircraft as either F-16 or F-18 which Del Rosario gave US defense officials depending upon the award of the trainer jets next year. The PAF is expected to have its first Multi Role Fighter (MRF) ready by 2016.

  2. It is much better if Korea T50 as interim fighter trainer parang F16 din yan at similar ang avionics
Pero PAF should seriously consider JAS 39 Gripen. This jet can match the large fighter jets. This is really
multi purpose jet: fighter, attack reconnaissance =J.A.S 39 truly has a sting!

  3. JAS-39 is one of my dream fighter jets for PAF. Saka Low-Cost sya..... Dream ko rin ang Rafale kaso mahal......

  6. We need to invest in modern jets and navy ships to protect our security. Guys tama kayo mahal ang mga yan. But sometimes we the goverment need to dig deep into the pocket because this is a long term investment. Saka di naman tyo bibili ng mga yan taon taon. FYI: Binili natin ang F5 noon pang 1965 at nagsilbi until 2005, tagal ng kanyang service until it retires walang interim replacement. Same as navy ships, na mas matanda pa sa mga lolo natin but still floating.. Buying arms is a long term process and has a long term benefits. Hindi yan over the counter product na bibilin mo pag nasa oras lang ng emergency. it needs time for procurement and training. Dont look at the AFP, look at our neighbors arms posture. Even Vietnam now has order 6 state of the art submarines and frigates. Sino ba mas nakakaangat in terms of economy. Lesson is if there is a will, there is a way..

    1. I hope they factor in the long term logistics expense and availability of these new air platforms. All good having a state of the art aircraft but it would suck if we cannot afford or find spare parts and accessories.

6 trainer air-crafts will do little to deter China. It would be like showing a .38 revolver to fully rigged soldier.

If Israel and Iran get into a fight, our big brother USA will struggle to assist us if China capitalizes on the opportunity to seize control of the Spratly's and who knows, it may well include the Philippines herself!

I have no answers for this one.... either way, China will eventually want Spratlys, whether we like it or not - maybe some divine intervention

In any case - we should focus that money on our internal problems.....poverty and corruption.....

  7. ANONYMOUS IS CORRECT IN ADVOCATING THE SAAB JAS39 GRIPEN. IT FITS THE PHILIPPINES NEED FOR A MRF AND HAS AN ADDED BENEFIT OF STOL CAPABILITY. THE ROYAL THAI AIR FORCE BOUGHT AN INITIAL 6 GRPIEN PLUS 2 EIREYE AWACS FOR AIR DEFENSE.

  9. AFP and phil. goverment are craving for U.S made fghter jets F16,F18 etc masyadong expensive for the meantime lets take a look at Kfir c10 jets offer by IDF di ba mas better ito dyan sa T50 na yan and almost same prices lang and much better performance compare sa T50 and aermacchi M546 ba yan or the JAS fighter jet Grippen for our navy naman consider the korean made navy ships

  10. AFP AND PHIL. GOVT. KEEP ON BUYING TRAINER JETS WITH NO FIGHTER JETS ON ITS HAND BEC. OF THE MENTALITY THAT U.S MADE FIGHTER JETS ARE MUCH BETTER NGEK.... SO EXPENSIVE THAT WE CANNOT AFFORD BETTER TAKE A LOOK LIKE ISRAEL MADE Kfir C10 Jets less expensive and comparable to other lates fighter aircraft and cost only as much as $21M Israel govt. already offer it to the AFP(AIR FORCE) also check JAS 39 much better sila for the meantime sa ating airforce also sa south korea yung navy ship nila nay offer din diba bakit ayaw pansinin ng AFP n Govt. natin Pres. 12. This is the part where I say we Filipinos never learn!!!!
Korea was a country that was ravaged by war... We went over there to help them in the 1950's, yet today they are making their own ships and Jet planes and making money out of it....strange why cant we simply do the same if not better.

We need to stop this brain drain, sending our Inteligencia as OFWs... other countries are benefiting due to this like singapore and malaysia
But most important we need military leaders who loves our Philipinnes and not their own pockets alone - STOP CORRUPTION

Imagine we are the Island Nation in the ASEAN yet new comers like Vietnam has a better equipped Navy....

    Its shameful..

  13. WHY T50 TRAINER JET INSTEAD KFIR OR MIG29 BOTH MULTI ROLE FIGHTER JETS PRICES, T50 ALMOST COST $22-25 WHILE BOTHE KFIR AND MIG 29 JUST COST BET. $25-27 AFP/GOVT. WANT TO BUY T50 SO OUR PILOT CAN BE READY FOR F16/18/22 BUT WE CAN'T HAVE THEM BEC. OF THEIR EXPENSIVE PRICE LOOK AT SRI LANKA OUR ECONOMY ARE MUCH MORE BETTER THAN THEM BUT LOOK AT THEIR AIRFORCE THEY HAVE MULTI ROLE FIGHTER JETS

  15. Its not all about the procurement cost. Its how much you pay for keeping the jets flying after the buying. Making the fighter jet airworthy is more expensive than its list price.

Kfir, Mig's and Gripen certainly have their own merits but its maintenance cost that keep it away from the PAF's radar for now.

Shouldn't we be practical considering the budgetary constraint?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I totally agree - in the past, the government buy surplus equipment not knowing that there are expiry dates on some of the production of spare parts - I mean the US give away their huey's for free to developing nations as they found it to expensive to keep, it was more profitable to give them away and make money off the spare parts needed to maintain such aircrafts.

If we buy into these air frames, have they considered, cost of cross training pilots (conversion), training ground crew and maintenance, spare parts procurement, time delay on spare parts, air-fuel, upgrades, housing of aircraft, security of aircraft, manning, continuous training, types of surface to air threats in the region.

we need to make sure the country is operating well before we buy into new toys that will be hard to maintain and sustain in the long term - it's all good now that we have this urge to spend due to China's aggressive interest on the Spratlys, but what happens when there is peace talks and all is clear again, add maybe five years to that and we will find the budget for such beautiful aircrafts disappearing into a new administrators pocket!

FIX THE CORRUPTION & SOLVE THE COUNTRIES ROOT PROBLEMS

China can have Spratly's - what good is it defending and dying for the Spratly's when the people that end up benefiting from it will be those in power.- those who steal from the people...

  16. guys, we cant just make our own, the project cost is massive! and before korea was able to buil their own ships and jets, they spent decades buying the best equipment from the U.S first,

Im sure we'll get there, for now buy muna tau, tapos tau na mg aaasemble, tapos we'll buy the license to build our own TA-50s then after gaining experience, we build our own,

ganto ang gnwa ng mga bansang tinutukoy nyo, korea, israel even china.

that said the trainer planes are there to train our pilots when we finaly get our hands on our f-18s and maybe even f-35s.

nga pla, i choose the TA-50, it has a greater top speed than the m-346, heavier payload, can turn up to 8gs, but to a Filipino pilot it can probably do 9gs or more.

and the APG67 radar, can be upgraded to an AESA radar, were gona pick out those J-10s and J-11s with this bad boy

  17. First perspective. Let's us think first of what it is that we can have in the short term in terms of surface ships and air assets to plug the gaping hole in our defense. We are militarily weak, and it naturally attracks every bully around us.

Next is the medium and long term. We need a 10-30 year plan. We will need missile-firing ships, submarines, a radar system, and of course cost-effective MRF - at least a squadron of it.

These assets are of course expensive, but you don't necessarily pay it in cash.

What is important is, let us start buying, and continue buying military assets. A P50B budget for the next 10 years is not an expensive proposition, considering you can depreciate ith the next 30 years.

  18. "The Aermacchi M-346 has a “Fly Away” price tag of about USD $15 million per plane." Ito na lang bumili ang Phil Government ng 15 units na Aermacchi M-346 then lagyan ng torpedo, long range missile, etc. Yung kaya lang ng gobyerno na pang matagalan ang service. maging practikal lang dapat. then tig 5 units na Aermacchi M-346 nakabased sa Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Pwedeng maging training at pwede ding maging attack jet fighter. Ika nga 2-in-1

    ReplyDelete
  19. Take a look of this Kfir c10 jet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IAI_Kfir). Fighter na bomber pa. bagay na bagay sa pinas ito. Lalo na sa Mindanao na kuta ng mga terrorist. di hamak na reasonable ang price US$4.5M per unit. Kahit 3 squadron ang bilhin ng pinas kaya, and each squadron nakabased sa Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

  22. it's about time that the Philippine Air Force acquire modern jet trainers and fighters. The American F-16 C/D, and F/A - 18 C/D could be made available to allied countries by 2016 since these planes are going to be replace by the stealth F-35 Joint strike fighter.

    ReplyDelete
  23. We are looking at these two planes, the Korean T/A-50 and the Italian M-346 to be use as advance lead in fighter trainer. By 2016, we intend to have the American F-16 C/D Falcons or the F-18 C/D Hornets. It would be nice to buy the French Rafales, Eurofighter Typhoon, the F-35 JSF, F-16 E/F or the F-18 E/F Super Hornets but we just can't afford these new planes.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Panahon na para magkaroon na ang PAF ng modern jets trainers at fighters. I would go for the F-16's dahil low maintenance aircraft at may service facilities na ang Lockheed Martin sa Clark Field Pampanga. If those Chinese fuckers want to start a shooting war with us, we can fight back. Advantage tayo dahil pwede natin ilagay sa Palawan ang ating mga fighters. We can arm these planes with Harpoon air to surface or maverick air to surface missiles to attack their intruding ships. Mahihirapan sila dahil malayo ang mainland China sa West Philippine Sea. We Also need to upgrade our air force base in Palawan by having longer runways and modern radar systems to track down these bastards.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Kailangan din natin lagyan ng Harpoon mnissiles at surface to air missiles ang nakuha natin na Hamilton class ship sa US. Sana maka acquire pa tayo ng Hamilton class ships o kaya Oliver Hazard Perry class frigates sa US. We need these vessels to patrol and guard our territorial waters.

We have to build our own warship, parang wala kayong tiwala sa kakayahan nang pinoy. Sisiw lang sa mga pinoy ang mga project na yan. Hindi naman yan lilipad eh. 39. The Philippine Air Force are better equip with F 16, expensive but very capable. Suitable for interceptor role, this would warn China commie that we mean business. It's expensive but it's worth every penny. For insurgents how about the A 10 Warthog very capable for this role. This is the outcome when our government ignored the facts that we need the U.S. 7th Fleet, imagine carrier task force parked in your backyard instead our Philippine Navy has to row a relic ship . . . .banca! 41. The Eurofighter Typhoon is by far more SUPERIOR than the Gripen and F16's and if we can get them on the same price range, it's one better option to consider! It's 3:1 Ratio with an F16 according to an RAF Pilot and a friend of mine who works at RAF Mildenhall as an F15 Eagle technician NATO in the UK. Just arrived in UK last week for a tour and visited some friends, I had a very nice almost close encounter experience last Saturday at RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk UK with a Eurofighter typhoon doing a low flyby, to my amazement I forgot to take pictures or even a quick video! it was an awesome experience!!!!

If were going to be spending the same amount according to this article on the price of just a second hand F16 A/B or a brand new JAS GRIPEN C/D for $ 1.25B USD, then with rather have the TYPHOON for the same price! can you imagine how much we would spend if we were to get F16s,F18s, C/D E/F, Gripen NG and still it wouldn,t match the Capabilities of the Eurofighter Typhoon! and that's a fact.

Even the US F15E Eagle which is considered the Best Combat Proven Fighter Jet ever! was outclassed by the EF2000 in 2:1 Ratio, F16C/D 3:1 Ratio an American USAF General will testify how excelent, or how closer can you get with the EF2000 from an F22 RAPTORs Capabilities of 10:1 compared to TYPHOONs 5:1 average.

Light Attack Planes in market today.
    1. UAC Yak-130 Mitten - $15-20 Million (Russia)
    2. Aermancchi M-346 Masters - $20-25 Million (Italy)
    3. KAI T-50 Golden Eagle - $25-30 Million (South Korea)
Any of this three(3) have a strong and weak capabilities. Only the Yak-130 can't fo supersonic speed. They T-50 have a shorter range. M-346 have a weak Air-Air capabilities...
    but all are excellent hardware...

  49. No sense in buying old F18's (F18A's, etc) dahilm very short range sila, maliit masyado fuel tank, dalawa pa makina... kaya phased out na sila ng US in favor of the bigger SuperHornets, F18E (very expensive)

Why dont we look at russian designed aircrafts?

Sukhoi 27 cost about US$30M, rugged plane - rough airstrip capability, equivalent of f15 eagle, better than f18... mas matibay pa kaysa american planes ang airframes.

Mig 29 or the smaller and equivalent to f16..

Russia licenses other countries to build these aircrafts for their own use.

India got a license to build their own Sukhoi 27, at the last few exercises, natalo nila american pilots using f15s and f16..

pinakamaganda sana, sukhoi 27 with israeli electronics... tailormade for phil requirements.

Lagyan ng Airborne RADAR ang isang lumang Jumbo Jet ng PAL, 737 siguro (AWACS)

few Sukhoi 27 - for air defence (air to air engagement)
many mig 29 - MRF (air to air, bombing, etc)

High-low mix, ganito din gamit ng USAF
F15 + f16, (papalitan ng f22 + f35) or the USN F14+F18A, (pinalitan na ng purely f18E MRF, retired na f14 .. sayang ayaw ipamigay.. hehehehe)

But i strongly push for using russian designed planes, mas low maintenance sila, mas rugged, kahit saan pwede, mas mura pa...

The rest ng perang matitipid spend sa TRAINING ng PILOTO.... wala yan sa gamit, nasa skill yan... Simulators, Jet Fuel, etc....

remember, the F5 that we retired was used by US NAVY as aggressor plane para sa F14 TomCat... hindi sya gagamitin agressor plane kung mahina sya, it can match the F14 on the hands of a skilled Pilot...

The Indian Airforce using the less expensive SU 27 proved equal or better than US Pilots on a Fair Battle ground, (Parehas may AWACS)

Kapag may natirang pera, bigay sa Navy para hindi naman pang Coastguard lang capability Navy natin... Puro kanyon lang gamit.

  52. By the way, we can buy 2 top of the line mig 29 PLUS 1 old MIG 29a as trainer for the price of 1 f16C/D.

Therefore, we can buy the 76 aircraft at half the price and use the extra money for training...

Do I still need to say more?

  54. MGA PARE FOR ME THE F-16 IS STILL THE BEST OPTION FOR THE PHILIPPINES...AN F-16 CANNOT BE COMPARED EVEN TO T-50 GOLDEN EAGLE (TRAINER)WHICH WILL COST US $21M PER JET. WE CAN BUY F16 C/Ds FOR $16 TO 18M WITH AVIONICS MUCH ADVANCE THAN A TRAINER T-50 BECAUSE IT IS DESIGNED AS A FIGHTER/BOMBER. DONT REALLY UNDERSTAND WHY WE ARE SO EAGER TO GET A VERY EXPENSIVE TRAINER JET WITH A CAPABILITY OF MORE THAN SPEED OF SOUND WHEN IN FACT EVEN THE USAF HAVE NO SUCH TRAINER JET IN THEIR INVENTORY BUT THEIR PILOTS CAN FLY THE F-15, F-16, F-18, F22 AND F-35. IT MORE LESS EXPENSIVE THAT WE PURCHASE ADVANCE SIMULATORS AND JUST LIKE THE AMERICANS CAN FLY THE MOST ADVANCE JETS IN THE WORLD WITHOUT STRAPPING IN A ADVANCE TRAINER JET.

WHAT REALLY IS THE REAL ISSUE? WE MUST HAVE A LEGITIMATE FIGHTER WHICH JUST LIKE A NOKIA CEL PHONE CAN BE UPGRADED IF THE BUDGET CAN AFFORD IT. IT IS ONLY THE F-16 CAN FIT TO THAT REQUIREMENT. DO YOU KNOW SOME ADVANCE F-16 WERE UPGRADED WITH BEYOND VISUAL RANGE OR BVR CAPABILITY. THIS IS THE REASON THE F-16 CAN EXTEND EVEN BEYOND 2025.

AND AGAIN WITH THE NAVY..WE DONT HAVE TO PURCHASE NEW SHIPS OR SECOND HAND SHIPS. WE HAVE THE HAMILTON, PEACOCK CLASS CORVETTES, AND OTHER FAST CRAFTS. RATHER BUY SHIPS WE JUST INSTALL HARPOON, GABRIEL OR EXOCET OR ANTI AIRCRAFT MISSILES IN OUR EXISTING INVENTORY.

  55. AND PLEASE IF WE HAVE TO SUGGEST JET FIGHTERS IN OUR INVENTORY..DO NOT ENDORSED MIGS OR SUs. EVEN THE FORMER WARSAW PACT COUNTRIES SUCH AS POLAND ARE NO LONGER BUYING MIGS AND SUs THEY PREFER F-16s AND POLAND WAS ABLE TO GET A BARGAIN WITH $12M PER F-16S, FOR 24 JETS
WITH AN OPTION UPGRADE TO BVR WITH THE HELOP OF U.S. INDONESIA WHO HAD PREVIOUSLY BRAND NEW MIG-29s HAVE ALREADY A PROBLEM ON MAINTENANCE AND OPT TO BUY SECOND HAND F-16s. HISTORY IN AIR WARFARE UP TO THE IRAQI WAR THE MIGS AND SUs ARE NOT A MATCH TO THE AMERICAN MADE FIGHTERS SPECIALLY THE F-15 WITH A 101-0 AND F-16 60-0. HOPE WE SHOULD BE ENLIGHTENED WITH THESE FACTS AND RECORDS. IT IS DIFFICULT TO INVEST OF SOMETHING WHICH HAS NOTHING TO PROVE.

  56. hahaha pare during un mock dog fight with the indian air force and USAF, it is purely a dog fight not using any technology. kaya sinabi nila tinalo ng indian fighter pilots ang f-15 at f-16 pilots sa dog fight using the SU 27 and SU 30s. but that is not really correct..kasi ang technology ng american fighters di ginamit. but kung gamitin talaga full potential ng american fighters un technology di pa makita ng indian fighter pilots and mga amerikano na tamaan na sila ng missile. kaya un doktrina pag gawa ng american at russian made fighters mag kaiba. ang amerikano dahil maganda ang tecnology nila secondary lang un dog fighting at un russian ginawa nila more agile un fighters nila to offset the technology ng amerikano once makalapit sila. but because of that concerned introduce ng amerikano un f-22 and f-35 kaya ngaun lalong naging unbeatable they have the agileness and non-comparable technology..kaya kahit sinong airforce they just dreaming in defeating the american technology. kahit sa f-15, f16, and f-18 di pa rin nila ma defeat un technology ng present russian made or any other fighters. advertisement lang yan dahil gusto ng amerikano un f-22 at f-35 ang i promote..kayo na lang mag amerikano

  57. Is't true that it would only have a unit cost of 16M to 18M dollars for the F16 C/D second or third generation MRA? it is mentioned above that it would cost up to 27M dollars. I agree that the F16 is wise aircraft to procure for purpose of maintenance and upgrading. it is the best for our air force. but recently the president of korea visited the Philippines and P-Noy asked to help the AFP for modernization and one of it is to buy an multi-role aircraft for air defense. possibly it would be the T-50 Golden Eagle. i think it is ok for now coz it is also made partly by lockheed martin of the US and it is better to have than nothing. i am confuse DND is planning to buy 6 F16 Falcon C/D or F18 Hornets but next year bidding for light attack aircrafts will be between T-50 Golden Eagle and M-346?

  58. For now, better to develop the cali T-610 super pinto, we already have the working drawing and rights, so that we will have our very own light attack aircraft like the T-50 or TA-50 golden eagle. do some upgrading and changes so it would be more reliable. may be we could ask our ASEAN partners to develop this light attack aircraft or jet trainer. Indonesia and Vietnam for example or Japan and Korea. may be we could ask a partnership with lockheed martin of the US. let's do a testing of one jet then decide or the government to take the risk to develop a one or three new Cali T-610 super pinto for internal use and patrol short distance.

  59. WE WILL BUYING A T-50 GOLDEN EAGLE WITH ONLY A TRAINER CAPABILITY YOU HAVE TO UPGRADE AGAIN WITH ADDITIONAL COST TO MAKE IT A FIGHTER CAPABILITY THAT WILL BE A DOUBLE EXPENSE..ACTUALLY WE DONT HAVE TO HAVE SO MANY FIGHTER TRAINERS. WHAT WE NEED ADVANCE SIMULATORS THAT OUR PILOTS WILL STILL BE UP TO THE STANDARD. WHY AMERICAN PILOTS STILL ABLE TO FLY THE MOST SOPHISTICATED FIGHTERS LIKE THE F-16, F-15, F-18, F35, F22 WITHOUT THE T-50 EAGLE. PLEASE LOOK TO THE PURCHASES MADE BY POLAND, THAILAND, INDONESIA ON THE F-16S ITS MIND BOGGLING WHAT THEY WERE ABLE TO GET RANGE FROM $10-12M. BY THE WAY IF YOU WILL BUY THE F-16 YOU HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY OF A FIGHTER CAPABILITY. PLEASE COMPARE THE AVIONICS AND WEAPON SYSTEM AN F-16 WILL CARRY THAN A T-50 EAGLE..AND BY THE WAY F-16 IS MACH 2 PLUS WHILE A T-50 IS ONLY MACH 1.5 AND THE F-16 IS A GUARANTEE WHEN IT WILL FLY NOBODY WILL CHALLENGE IT SPECIALLY IF IT HAS ITS BVR.

  60. for those who said that the indian fighter pilots with the MIG 29, SU 27 AND 30 out performed the american pilots with f-15S AND f-16S is misleading.

during the FIRST BILATERAL DISSIMELAR AIR COMBAT (DACT) COPE INDIA 2004 exercise that was held at Gawailor Air Base. The f-15Cs were tasked to defend the Gamailor Air Base against an attack of Mirage 2000, su-30k, mig 29 and mig 21 that will escort a strike force of mig 27s. In this scenario the f-15s are not only outnumbered, it operate without the usual AWACS and they only rely the Idian Airforce ground and airbrone radar which the f-15 pilots are not familiar. But in a real war the F-15s or any U.S aircrafts will not operate on this manner. with the AWACS and the U.S fighters (BVR) has still the overwhelming technology and material advantage in any existing or newest russian MIGS and SUs or any other fighters in any nation.
Again in a real war the MIGS and SUs before they can find the U.S. fighters in their radars they are already hit with the long range missiles. that how potent the combination of US fighters and AWACS. but with the f-22 and f-35 in the inventory, the advantage of maneurability and agility of the russian fighters are already gone.

  63. JAS-39 is a big blow to the SWEDISH SAAB MANUFACTURER. This aircraft had been involved on several engine malfunction during airborne that cause numbers of JAS-39 air disaster. I don't know why these people are so ignorant on assuming the SAAB made JAS-39. Try to settle down on F-35 II that's the best option the PAF can acquire. F-16 and F-18 can't match SUKHOI fighters LIKE SU-33 and SU-37 which China have. These fighters can suspend in the air due to its swivel thrust engine which F-16 and F-18 don't have. SUKHOI fighter jets aren't same on MIG's and so when you defend you airspace territory and when you do reconnaissance mission, you must see to it that your airforce can match chinese fighters not to mention there new stealth fighter long range bomber aircraft.

  64. again its another misleading information. americans and russian fighters are designed for different purposes. the americans fighters which has more advance avionics and weapons system such as its long, medium, and short range missiles are not really designed for dog fighting but to hit its target before they can be spotted. The russians which has a lesser technology in their avionics and weapon system designed their fighters for a close in dog fighting. But considering the history of air warfare of the jet age from the korean war up to the gulf war the MIGS AND SUs have been shot downed by the american jet fighters like pigeons. Presently, as a result F-15s 101-0 and f-16s 60-0. We dont have to be afraid with the newest inventory of MIGS and SUs of the Chinese. Because our doctrine in the air warfare should be purely defensive. we have to based our fighters (if we can have the f-16) out of reached by the Chinese jet fighters and once they have reached the maximun distance thats the only time we will unleashed our fighters. If you are low in fuel even you have the most agile fighter the only chance is to escape or return to your base because opting for a dog fight is as suicide..lack of fuel means you cannot out speed or maneuver so much or else you cannot reach your base. An f-16 with a BVR ia a very potent weapon. Hope we will not be mislead with purely advertisement of the russians that they have the best fighter..agility yes..but again we have no record to show from the russians and chinese that they were able to give a good showing in regards to air warfare.

  65. what i like with the f-16 you can easily upgrade even its airframe. the block 60 can extend the life of the f-16 to 2025. so dont count out the f-16 its still a potent fighter/bomber. there are still more than 4t f-16s in the world..if u want a thrust vectoring the f-16 is ready. it has already a prototype before the russians made their SUs with thrust vectoring..by the way production of the f-15 silent eagle (stealth version) is on going. the koreans will be the first customer. the f-15 silent eagle is made due to the high cost of the f-22. the f-15 has also the thrust vectoring prototype. so dont count out the f-15 and f-16 include also the f-18. they are here to stay till 2025.

i dont think we need a trainer jet with a supersonic capability in order our pilots can fly the newest jet fighter.

Unless you've done your reading(and I know you haven't, because you suggested the MiG-29), Soviet/Russian-pedigree weapons are not compatible with our current logistics tail. Their ammunition, rockets, missiles, avionics systems, maintenance routines, everything, is almost completely different from what we've been using for the past decades. Shifting our base now just because the MiG-29 is cheap to acquire is not thinking straight... and if you haven't heard, even countries like Malaysia are trying to dump their MiGs because they cost way, way more to maintain than the American planes.

Think your suggestion through... You want the most WESTERN of trainers/LCA(the BAe Hawk series) to prepare your pilots for one of the most ubiquitous and RUSSIAN of fighters, the MiG-29? Not only is there a large disconnect in terms of training syllabus, material, and technique... but 100 MiGs? Where will you get the money to keep them flying?I'm not giving up... 83. I just found this site today, it's a good venue for us all ordinary Pinoy to have what's on our mind and be heard by the APF. Really, the Philippines consider arming itself with sophisticated fighter jets and ships. Don't just simply give up the KIGs that's our last economic propelling deposits for our future. What's for the funds if it does not invest in long term and long overdue armaments for the country to defend itself. Let's all pray together that the AFP should really be serious about their modernization programs and that the funds really be used for it seriously - let's do away corruption momentarilly if indeed this is happening. Invest in the future of our Pinoy generations, wait until the Philippines is economically progressive. This is for our own country's future and for life to be easier then.

For my part, maybe the AFP should think, study well and consider the best and the excellent value for that modernization investments. To consider all combinations of armaments that are suited to our external defenses that could also be used internally.

    1. Latest generations of fighter jets is best to consider so that time will come, at least, we will count the age of that jets longer than other countries have already.

    2. Combinations of fighter jets squadrons so that the PAF will be able to intercept, warn, move or even engage intruding jets. Combinations, I mean layers of fighting machines that are applicable to our achipelagic country.

    3. The military has the best minds for this... PURSUE IT

  84. modern day dog fighting no longer require a full squadron in the air. look at the Iraqi war, you can observe they are only four jets at the most engage in the air while the rest is on bombing mission. technology are catching up that it only need few fighters to do its purpose. To launch numerous fighters in the air only negate the effect of technology. friend, we are no longer in world war 2. even in the israeli-arab war and vietnam war they are less fighters engage in the air.

so dont worry the philippines is just like great britain. is an island base. the strategy is to based our fighters out of reach of our enemies and when their fighter already reached the maximum range thats the only time we launch our f-16s, if we have it. a jet fighter who has only fuel to return to their base will have difficulty to dog fight and to maintain top speed cause doing a lot of maneuvers will consume so much fuel that returning to base its no longer an option. even a jet with a thrust vectoring but low in fuel will be useless.

an f-16 with Beyond Visual Range (BVR), can hit a target before they will be spotted. Now, do you need to have a lot of fighters in the air?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ginamit ba ng RAF ang taktikang yan during the Battle of Britain against Luftwaffe? May point ka sa pagsabing sagadin ang fuel ng enemy aircraft (intruder) since island tyo then launch our fighter to engage them. You're absolutely right na BVR na ang labanan sa future conflict ng mga air forces. With F-16 even second hand (with constant upgrading)is a force to reckon with lalo na kung BVR capable ito with AIM-120 AMRAAM.Kung may enough fund na pwede na rin tayong mag-acquire ng mga more capable platform to meet the demand and needs of modern air force.

      Delete
    2. Mr. Cenabre,
Why not? Layers of fighter jets can do the job. You dont have to launch all these jets into the air at once, will you? Think that the PH is just a small archipelagic country, that is within the range of China or even Malaysia's jets. Wars in the Spratlys and even in the Paracels, our Luzon or Visayas or even Mindanao can easily be a target within that range, so where will you hide your jets then, under the seas?

You are giving Iraq as an example, it is a land mass country compared to ours.

    3. derek, during the vietnam war when there is a possibility that china or russia will attack the american bases in the philippines, our fighters the f-5s and f-8s were spread out at villamor airbase, basa airbase, mactan air base and zamboanga. the intention, in case of a surprise attack we will not be wipe out in one strike and has the capability to respond.

if you will compute the distance of the nearest chinese mainland fighter base to the spratlys, the distance is more or less a thousand miles. if the the capability of the sus, migs and j-10s are from 2t to 3t miles, once they reached the spratlys they only have 15 to 30 minutes to hover over the spratlys, and they will only have enough fuel for a return flight.

what am i trying to prove. except for the china bombers, its fighters dont have yet the capability to reached any part of the philippines including our air bases in villamor, basa, mactan and zamboanga. but if we have the capability, we can scramble f-16s and to chase them out of our territory. it will be foolish for any fighter to engage if its fuel is just enough for a return flight even it is a thrust vectoring.

what i am trying to imply. we need only a deterrent. with the f-16s, that will make any country think twice before they attempt to enter our economic zone.

again, with the new status of china as major economic power in which the united states and philippines are his customers, no way china will go to war. the problem they dont just respect us. one example pinoys have been convicted to death, even requesting for clemency no less than our president and vice president still they are put to death. but if there are chinese committed crimes in the philippines they are easily deported back to china. now, without fighters and navy ships will china respect us?? but can they do that to malaysia, vietnam and taiwan, a big NO. why these countries has capability to respond.

  85. Sir, unfortunately our neighbors are starting to acquire aircraft carriers so their range is much more farther now on their land bases. Their carriers can carry at least 50 planes. I think the strategy in air warfare hasn't change and still the best plan is to send at least 2 squadrons of fighter and bomber jets. Iraq war will be very different if war with China will happen. They have the largest air force in the world today. I don't think their generals will send only 1 to 3 jets on the air. They will use their advantage in numbers in this war. Philippines will be outnumbered 50 to 1.....but I am not saying that we will be at war with China just stating the facts...

    1. Our archipelagic country need not have to have aircraft carriers because our islands are already or can be used as aircraft carrier bases already around our territorial seas. the best that the AFP can do is to develop strategic island bases as carrier for that squadrons of fighter jets. One, Palawan is best for that in the Spratlys and by adding ground-to-air missiles and ground to seas missiles. Who was that one here who suggested putting missiles just worth 1m. each and put it along the western coasts from aparri to palawan to mangsee island which is just near the borneo island (incidentally is ours)? Remember that the Ph or we are not an agressive country of conquering other territories out of greedy expansionism, we dont need carriers?

May I pose these questions. Why Ph is not having protest againts Vietnam when it has already occupied islands in the spratlys that are within our EEZ? except of course the mischief (panganiban reef) silently occupied by the Intsik at night time. hehehe

Also, why the Ph is not protesting against Malaysia also for some of the islands like Investigator island and the other two islands they are occupying?

  87. dont worry with the aircraft carriers, the united states will deal with that. and i dont think china is crazy enough to go to war and sacrifice now new status as economic power. the problem really, since we are weak and nothing to show any military muscle in our the airforce and navy, they could intrude our territory (Spratlys's)and intimidate us. but in regards to islands occupied by vietnam and taiwan, china cannot force on them cause they know the consequence. taiwan is not a pushover and vietnam after the U.S. withdrew they defeated china in a border war twice.

the real issue, our neighboring countries do not respect us because our airfoce and navy has nothing to show. but in the 70's and early 80's when we have 24 f-5s and 24 f-8s (a carrier superiority fighter controversially replace by the f-4, but considered better than the f-4) no one troubled us in a territorial dispute. simple reason we have the muscle. its only when we lost our air arm (retirement of the f-5 and f-8s fighters) and our naval
ships are older than our admirals that we have now these predicament.

so the solution we must have at least a squadron of f-16s as deterrent. first build up the air force for quick response and buy missile gun boats with anti aircraft and ship missile system. and what this PAF will buy the new t-50 trainer jets??? only last year PAF acquired the 18 brand new propeller driven SF-260, and still we have the trainer jets s-211 (out of 24 only 7 are serviceable). My God, we are flooding our air fleet with trainer planes. I dont think we have to buy the T-50 golden eagle in order our pilots can fly f-16s or f-18s. why other countries before this t-50 were able to fly f-16s. i suggest, out of a squadron of f-16s part of it at least 4 or 5 f-16 b (2 set version) which i presume can be used as a trainer and its much cheaper than the t-50.

    1. So Mr. Cenabre where lies the problems then that we lost the continuity of air powers when these PAF jets were retired without the necessary replacements? It seems that the AFP lost its focus for that immediate replacements more upgraded than the F5 jets.

You tend to imply that the AFP did not plan for it very well, that's why China is now intimidating and intruding into our air and naval spaces.

      Delete
    2. thats true derek...in the 70s and late 80s we have a formidable air fleet of 24 f5s and 24 f8s. first, when we retire the f8s we did not made any replacement for one reason our defense budget was cut to maintain only 24 f5s. then next, we purchase 24 s-211 trainer jets and which a number was converted to attack aircraft and future interim replacement for the f5s while the air force is still projecting what type of MRF we need to replace the f5s. this is the reason a big portion of fort bonifacio was sold in order the proceeds of the sale will be used for the modernization program of which supposedly benefactors will be the air force and navy. the program started in the early 1990s but its already 2012 we have not seen any of that modernization and the proceed of that sale, we dont know what happened but for sure its already used up for other purpose. now, our predicament in 2005 we retired the last of our f5s, and immediately the s-211s fill in the shoes of the f-5 as trainer and light fighter. i dont think the s-211s is a bad aircraft but since was used for dual purpose trainer same time light fighter it was over used and being designed as trainer jet its engine and air frame cannot withstand the stress. out of the 24 s-211s only 7 is flyable. the problem with our planners when the f-5s one by one succumb, we seat on the program of its replacement. now we are jealous why indonesia was was able to get a bargain of f-16s from the united states when in fact we are a close ally of the united states and now we are asking the united states if we can have the same bargain. it is not only indonesia, please count thailand, poland (former warsaw pact)and other countries are just too smart in negotiation, while we choose to turn our heads in the other side and got nothing.

and now we are excited about the t-50 golden eagle another trainer jet with mach 1.5 capability and a price list of $ 23-25m which we plan to buy 6. only 6???? can this serve our purpose as trainer same time interim fighter??? would it be another s-211 predicament??? if our air force has a good planning why we bought 18 brand new sf-260 trainers only last 2011 and again we will add another trainer jets. our air force is flooded with trainer planes my friend but without a single MRF.
yes, china has will continue to intimidate us or violate our economic zone because we dont have any source of deterrent. but china will be careful to venture near the islands occupied by malaysia, vietnamn and taiwan do you have the answer derek, why?

  92. There is a news that South Korea will retire it's F-5 (B, C, E-tiger models) fleet of jets. They have at least 90 pcs of these aircrafts which they did some modifications. During the visit of their President here I think but don't quote me on this that they are willing to donate some of this to Philippines. If we can secure an agreement to their government to give us all 90 pcs of this F-5 in exchange that we will buy at least 10 pcs of their TA-50 jets and 3 naval ships which they manufacture then it will be a better deal. These F-5's still pack a punch in terms of air capabilities. From patrolling, dog fighting and bombing. Imagine getting 90 aircraft, this will be enough for now while we continuously upgrade our Armed Forces. Our pilots are also very much familiar in handling F-5 jets.....I hope the military planners and our President pursue this deal with South Korea. We are also a friend and close ally of South Korea. We help them during the Korean War and this time we need their assistance...

Speaking of S. Koreans they are good and nice people to, they are also friendly once to talk to them and maybe they are just shy to initiate speaking to Filipinos maybe because of language barrier.

  96. Update: Israel sealed a deal to buy 30 Italian M346 military training jets for $1Billion, beating S.Korean T50. 3 countries have chosen M346 over T50 so far.

M346 is much practical for the PAF limited budget. Cheaper to maintain, safer because it has 2 engine vs t50's single, after burning engine, more expensive and vulnerable if the only engine fail. Also T50 is a bigger aircraft.

Although T50 is supersonic vs M346's subsonic and the fact that T50 is endorsed by LockMart, PAF is buying f16 anyways, so they can use M346 as the routine ops and f16 for critical ops.

    ReplyDelete
  97. It seems the DND has trained its sight on the M346 trainers than the T50.

Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said yesterday the AFP went to Italy to finalize deals on the fighter jets, without elaborating further.

The Korean jet reportedly was more expensive than the Italian jet, and communality issues with existing jets swayed more favour to the European trainers, which was also chosen by Italy, Singapore, and lately, Israel.

He said the trainer jets is ready for award in June and should be delivered in 2014. It is part of the 138 defense contracts that would be approved by July 31.

Gazmin said the procurement from Korea covers only the Multi-Role Vessel for the navy. Clearly, no aircraft acquisition from Korea.

The S-211 mainstay of the PAF comes also from the same manufacturer,Alenia Aermacchi.

Meanwhile, President Aquino hopes to seal the deal for a squadron of US made F-16C/D blocks in April when he travels to Washington. The squadron is expected to be ready by 2015.

According to proposed contract, Philippine Aerospace Development Corporation (PADC) will assemble 4 aircraft after 2 deliveries by Alenia Aermacchi. Training system is provided by Boeing.

PADC is a Government owned and controlled corporation established in 1973 to promote development of Philippines aerospace industry.

    1. thats good news. f-16c/d are BVR capable. but it seems from 2012 to 2014 or 2015 still the philippines is without an MRF. we just expect that the remaining 7 s-211 will no longer flyable by 2014 and immediately the 6 M346 will become a trainer at the same time interim fighter while waiting for the f-16 c/d to arrive on 2015. imagine 6 M346 trainer jets for one year or more will do the tasked as trainer and fighter. the brand new M-346 as trainer and fighter, how many pilots who will be eager to try this plane. will these be another s-211 that by the time the f-16s will arrive, the 6 M346 is already wasted. what is these f-16 c/d is this brand new or second hand. if it is brand new, well, is worth waiting but if it is second hand why take us so long to get the f-16s when indonesia and thailand after negotiations it did not take them long to have their f-16s.

how about again for the sake of the country, negotiate or beg for donation again for a squadron of f-5Es to be retired by korea, we can used for interim fighter and just let the 6 M-346 do its job as trainers while waiting for the f-16s to arrive in 2015.

we are wasting a lot of money buying trainer planes and jets. how about the 18 newly bought sf 260s trainer planes last 2011? look what happened to the s-211s, 24 were bought in 1995 now only 7 are operational. the f-5s, were acquired late 1970s and retired 2005. so its better investment to buy more legitimate fighters than trainer jets which has a shorter life span, the more if its dual role trainer/fighter.

  99. good news f-16 c/d are BVR capable. but are these brand new or second hand. if it is brand new then its worth waiting but if second hand why it take 2015 to be delivered. why indonesia and thailand and other countries who bought second hand f-16s have it in a short time?

also the 6 M-346 trainer jets we can received only by 2014. by that time the 5 remaining s-211s will be no longer flyable. the 6 M-346 upon arrival in 2014 will immediately fill the shoes of the s-211s as trainer and fighter. how many pilots will be eager to jump on the M-346 being a brand new aircraft? 6 trainer jets to have a dual role for one year or more, can they do the job?? will it be another s-211 once the f-16 will arrive on 2015 the M-346 will already used up.

for the sake of our country can our govt request for a bargain or donation from south koreas who will be retiring their f-5es that will be used as interim fighter before the arrival of the f-16s in 2015. I recommend the M-346 will be used only for one role if the air force will decide it to be a trainer then it should be a trainer, if they want it to be a fighter then for a fighter only. we should preserve the 6 brand new M-346 to have it a longer life span. we should learn the lesson what happened to the s-211.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I agree to Mr. Cenabre....also as I have posted before let's go for the F5's of South Korea while waiting delivery of the F-16's at least we will have jet fighters patrolling our skies. Ask or negotiate with Korea for at least 2 squadrons of F-5 or better yet the whole fleet they will retire plus their F-4's. These jets can also serve as back-up's to the F-16's which will be our main fighter jets.
The military planners should act now before it's too late....

    ReplyDelete
  101. yah it may be too late some countries in asia and africa will be interested cause the f-5Es are the upgraded version of the F-5A/B. the avionics is almost the same with the f-16A/B. by the time we make a move, these planes are no longer in the tarmac in korea.

i know we have bright minds in govt and armed forces but it seems in regards to making negotiations in arms acquisition we are slow and left behind. korea is very accommodating to us because of our contribution in the korean war. hope could make a bargain or donations of f-5Es a squadron maybe 18 or 24 fighters be our interim fighters while waiting for the f-16s in 2015. and by the time the f-16s will arrive, the f-5Es will be revert to reserve status again to lengthen its life span. we will be back to the 70s when we have at least 2 squadrons of more or less 40 fighters. another recommendation in case of any retirement of fighters, immediately replacement will be ready at least in short notice. we dont have to wait that the whole squadron will be retired its too costly. example, if there are 2 fighters to be retired we can immediately buy 2 or 5 brand new jets for its replacement.

Also I like the Alenia Aermacchi M-346 Master, it's more affordable than KAI T50 Golden eagle. We could also use some mobile SAMs (surface-to-air missiles).

    ReplyDelete
  104. sori julius but i think u might be wrong..f-16s is the most affordable jet fighter now..and regards to maintenance we are sure the f-16s have the spare parts and upgrade avionics we need if we have the budget. the JAS 39 Gripen is not that mass produce not like the f-16 which more than 4,000 are flying even today.. so we expect if there is no mass production of JAS 39 it means less spare parts and the distance from its manufacturer in sweden it will cost as more. the f-16 has almost same price of the f-16. but i better go to the f-16. the f-16 is not really old, i even think it can still outlast the JAS 39 cause the latest upgrade of block 50 and 60 of the f-16 can still reach him up to 2025. the JAS 39 is produce in 1987 and its not new either its 25 yrs old since production. and once sweden will produce another new jet, we are a goner we will have problems of maintenance and parts.

I also share the same sentiments of those bloggers here, that our military thinkers, planners, strategists to move faster and convinced our congress and the executive departments of the immediate needs. Those islands are our only last hope to our nation's future and progress for the next Filipino breeds.

  124. sometimes its good to change topic but it must be a topic and information with importance that will contribute to our nation welfare. just like our recent topic of the philippine airforce acquisition of aircrafts. when we start with this forum, government has its priority about the mig-29 and f-18 as MRF no where in its plan the f-16 will be considered or if it is considered might be the last option. but we know the f-16 can best serve the philippine airforce than if we acquire a mig-29 or f-18 just what i said the f-16 if its a cell phone is just like a nokia, it depends with our budget we can choose what block we will upgrade it. it is only lately in these forum that the f-16 was noticed and bang!! the government decided to buy f-16s. dont know if these forum have helped the decision makers in the government but to those who contributed in the discussion we are all heroes. we have done our part as citizens of this country. but we should not stop. our airforce needs our support and all the AFP branch (army, navy, marines), including the PNP. Again, it is already proven that a nation with a strong armed forces has also a healthy economy.

  133. Even if the Philippines would not or cannot upgrade its military and defense machines like naval ships and fighter jets, mark my words, the US will always be there for the Philippines. So, why spend money now when it can be used for economic progress instead. Why? Because our country, our islands and our seas are the most strategic in the world. If the US can hold the neck of the Philippines, they are the commanding superpower force both in the Pacific seas, West Philippine seas and Indian Ocean. In fact, they must always be friendly to the Philippines. They can cut costs between the pacific and indian oceans thru the Philippines if they want to remain the only world's superpower. So, southeast asian countries be thankful again to the Philippines. Again, you are all directly or indirectly benefiting from it. 136. Maganda ang M346, it is based on a relatively new design, the Yak-130. Highly capable aircraft, and very advanced Avionics. But I don't like the twin engines, it means more parts to look after, more engines to maintain. The M346 won't get off the ground only on one engine, though, so that is something the PAF should consider.

The TA-50 would be simpler to maintain due to its single engine, it is a bit faster, and carries a heavier load than the M346. I think the M346 is better in terms of maneuverability, but if I were to choose, I would go with the TA-50 for our Air Force.

    ReplyDelete
  137. The Israeli Air Force chose the M346 over the T-50. But take note that Israel is a much richer country than ours, where maintenance is not their primary concern: http://www.israeldefense.com/?CategoryID=483&ArticleID=936

    ReplyDelete
  138. with a lot of f-16s in the israeli airforce to buy a t-50 is a redundant. what they really need is just a pure trainer jet to train their new pilots and since the M346 is not that expensive as the t-50 is just the right stuff to train their new pilots.

  139. is not good to always rely with the united states even though it is already proven that uncle sam will always be at our side if we are in trouble. but as a nation we must have our own self determination. we must build our armed forces based on the vision what we want to be as a nation.

but if we want to be a joke of all nations then forget our armed forces. again, our intention we must have a credible navy and airforce to let other nations know that we are serious in protecting our sovereignty. not just to beg with our big brother the united states. i dont think the united states will go to war if china really meant to occupy the spratlys but rather it will just try to settle the issue in the U.N. so if we have the determination is really up to us against china. but as what vietnam have showed the world after ejecting the french and americans in indochina, vietnam after they eject americans, fought a border war against china but they defeated the chinese several times. thats what we called determination. now if we want the spratlys we have to face the chinese that just like the vietnamese we are determine to defend our territory.

our military have a proud heritage in world war 2 and the korean war. General Douglas McArthur after his experience with the filipino soldiers during the world war 2 and the korean war was quoted " the filipino soldiers are the best trench warfare soldier in the world..GIVE ME A HANDFUL OF FILIPINO SOLDIERS AND I WILL CONQUER THE WORLD". It on this period that the filipino soldiers was made known as one of the best of the world through its valor. Let us not waste this opportunity, even the chinese know during the korean war, has tasted the tenacity of the filipino soldiers and was even feared upon by its adversaries. so never count us out..just give the necessary equipment to our armed forces specially the airforce and navy we can have that respect again in our region.

Buying them is one thing maintaining them, keeping them air worthy is another...

  143. the f-16 block 20 is cheaper than any of the new generation of fighter jets now in service. but it has already a BVR capability. further, it is easier to maintain an f-16 due availability of spare parts specially more than 4 thousand is still flying. and if we have the budget we cant upgrade the f-16 to block 30, 40 and 50.

in regards to budget for our armed forces i think we have one of the lowest in the world. our education has even a higher budget than our armed forces but we cannot even build schools, make arm chairs or supply chalks?? why sri lanka was able to maintain a fighter jet squadrons and missile gun boats (acquired from israel). why other countries that put their budget more in their armed forces but have schools and were able to provide the basic needs to their people.

there is nothing wrong putting so much budget in our education but even our best university in our country and government supported, the University of the
Philippines slid to rank 200 or 300 in the world.

so its not a question if we can maintain a squadron of f-16 to fly. its how we manage we can support our soldiers, our navy and air force. its not the question of finance and budget its about how we manage it.

let me tell you this. in the late 40's when the US have the p-51 mustang, we have it. in the 50s when US have the sabres, we have it. in the 60s and 70s when the US have the f-5s and f-8s, we have it. but after EDSA Revolution, the air force was never the same again until we retired our last f-5 in 2005. with the f-5s and f-8s in the 70s we were able to maintain an air fleet of more than 40 aircrafts and University of the Philippines if i remember is in the top 50 university in the world and peso is equal to 7 dollars. at that time the armed forces has the biggest budget. the problem with us we sacrifice our security, this is the reason when it comes to world economy we cannot bargain so much cause other countries felt we are not secured, we cannot even protect our economic zones. no airforce and no navy means no foreign investors. no one will deposit in a bank with no security guards and that is the situation of the philipppines.

Let the Economists and Accountants do the job for you Militarists. Costs and pricing can be beyond your comprehensions. Other way, you try Actuarians to compute that sustainability of thinking. 149. The most sad part of our Philippine government and our AFP territorial defenders was that we or THEY are so noisy that we own those islands, now particularly with this scarborough shoal, but we do not guard it on regular basis, but react when poachers are already there. In baseball, the winner is one who always got the home base. Ohsss... my younger school days, I love this sport so much but where are my friends now. I cant find them on facebook. Imagine? despite that scarborough shoal is nearer to us but you were beaten by those Chinese fishermen and illegal poachers?

Remember, I am also thinking and estimating the size of that shoal given its 150 square kilometers, it must be as big as the City of Manila, and a protected area that. I can imagine a 12kilometer by 12kilometer land area, it must be large enough also for our fishermen to harvest what is ours is ours, said the President's spokepersons. AND TAKE NOTE, China is afraid of going hungry soon, it has to feed billion of people they would have do that to us.

It is very sad for our AFP. For GOD SAKE! USE YOUR STRATEGIES, BRAINS, or whatever you still have there.

May I pose this question. Does the Philippines really have intelligent military thinkers, strategists, researchers and planners?

    ReplyDelete
  150. in regards to the stand-off between our philippine navy and china please do not blame our military, navy and coast guard in the scarborough shoals. blame the decision makers specially the executive for not giving the right direction or action to be taken by our naval and coast guard units.

this not only happens in the the spratlys but even in our backyard in mindanao where our troops who tried to arrest lawless elements are massacred because they enter an MILF territory.

where in the world that government forces need to request for clearance to enter a rebel territory. i dont have any doubt that our soldiers will defend our territories at all cost but if government dont have the will or guts to decide for our soldiers, then why put our soldiers, airforce and navy in harms way?

i just pity those soldiers who died for this country but only criticized because they entered an MILF territory without clearance.

if in our backyard in mindanao we have already surrendered a portion of our territory what in the hell we are going to the spratlys when we cannot even guard it.

its just plain and simple if we want the spratlys restore our base in the kalayaan island where we have an air base and naval station before. if we dont have a budget to put up an operating base in the area then surrender the territory to the chinese.

really very unfortunate, the chinese are just laughing at us when those fishing boats were able to leave together with their catch cause of one big mistake made by our DFA that we are lured to an agreement that the chinese have to leave first but with no definite agenda if we can confiscate the items that they illegally fish in our territory. now, in violation of that agreement the chinese did not leave the area after all but only beef their presence by adding ships against a lone coast guard boat facing them.

Now, the chinese are now solidfying their claims. before they said in a peaceful settlement, now they said they will have now physical presence in the area. now..its too late. our govt miss an opportunity to be on top of the situation. before lost sabah..now we lost the spratlys.

sa international law di lang sa distance pag determine sa territorial integrity sa isang lupa but there is a need physical presence, like settlement and people. there are more chinese in the spratlys than filipinos dun pa lang talo na tayo. same with falkland it is thousand and thousand miles away from britain but since the inhabitants are british, britain can rightful claim the falklands which is nearer argentina. and another brute force we dont have that but britain have.

all countries are all in the sideline waiting for our move how we can deal the crisis against china. our government will try to appeal our case to the international court but again without the participation or acceptance of china to the proceeding our effort might be dim.

china is now beefing its forces in the scarborough shoals and putting physical presence to make sure there are more chinese than filipinos in the area. the physical position such as putting inhabitants in the place could solidfy china claim that the place is theirs.

thats the problem we cannot show force and strenght against china. again we dont have to be as strong as china. vietnam and taiwan military is not as big and as strong as china but they have a force that can make china think twice.

i tell you as a start one squadron of f-16s and presence of missile gun boats will make a difference but for now even the presence of our coast guard in the area is useless cause it cannot do anything it is outnumbered and outgun, right its nose chinese poachers are getting our resources. what happened to our new ship the brp gregorio del pilar never mind its still useless it does not have the teeth to scare the chinese.

but the f-16s will arrive still 2015 maybe too late for this crisis. what i said before no need to buy new ships just armed first our available fast patrol craft, our 3 peacock corvettes and the gregorio del pilar with missiles and the 2 newly acquired hamilton class.

  160. While CHINA is already beefing up it's forces in the West Philippine Sea ang preparing for WAR.....Philippines officials & Military planners are going WINDOW SHOPPING evaluating (kuno) weapons that we will be buying....Besides this NO ONE from the GOVERNMENT or EVEN MILITARY ORGANIZATIONS are creating action plans just in case a shooting WAR broke out between us and China. Have we seen any Generals or even the Defense Sec. going out in the public and start organizing or mobilizing reserves for training..NONE!!
They are still DELUSIONAL that bringing this to International Court will help us WIN this issue and China backing out...WAKE UP YOU FOOLS!!
