AN AIR taxi operator controlled by holding firm A. Soriano Corp. is seeking additional permits for its chartered flight business.

Island Aviation, Inc. has filed a petition before the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) to be granted the authority to operate domestic air transportation services.

In a CAB bulletin published in a newspaper late last week, the air taxi operator asked to be given a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity in order to continue its operations.

“Island Aviation has filed with the [CAB]… a petition for issuance of Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity to operate scheduled domestic air transportation services,” the bulletin read.

The aviation firm had started as a spin-off of the aviation department of A. Soriano Corp. in 2003 in order to support the air transport needs of Amanpulo Resort in Palawan.

The said permit authorizes any domestic aviation firm to engage in international or domestic air transportation services, according to the CAB Web site.

The petition was slated for a hearing on Jan. 9, 2012 at the CAB office.

Island Aviation, which offers charter services, operates two 19-seater Dornier 228, according to its Web site.

Its facilities are said to feature a cockpit voice recorder, flight data recorder, ground proximity warning system and a traffic collision avoidance system version II equipment for its turbine-powered aircraft.

“[Island Aviation] employs highly-skilled maintenance personnel highly trained in Germany on this type of aircraft (Dornier),” the firm’s Web site reads.

Island Aviation provides charter services to 25 destinations in Luzon including Baguio, Bosco in Batanes, Calapan in Mindoro, Cauayan in Isabela, Legazpi in Albay, El Nido in Palawan, Romblon in Romblon, Virac in Catanduanes, and Vigan in Ilocos Sur.

For the Visayas region, the firm listed 18 destinations. Island Aviation also flies to 15 destinations in Mindanao.

A. Soriano Corp., which was incorporated in 1930 as a holding firm, has core investments in cable and wire manufacturing firm Phelps Dodge Philippines Energy Products Corp. and recreation firm Seven Seas Resorts and Leisure, Inc., which owns Amanpulo Resort.

The holding firm also has investments in wireless broadband data services, aviation, real estate and manpower deployment.

Earlier this year, local carrier Zest Airways has filed for a petition to renew its certificate of public convenience and necessity.

Foreign carriers Malaysia Airline System Berhad (Malaysia Airlines), US-based United Air Lines, Inc. and India’s Jet Airways, Ltd. have also asked the CAB for authorization to operate flights to the Philippines through the issuance of a Foreign Air Carrier’s Permit earlier this year
