PAL Adds Two More 777

21 March 2017

Philippine Airlines (PAL) will add two new B777-300ER aircraft, part of long-term lease with Intrepid Aviation secured in 2014.

The aircraft is expected for delivery in December 2017 and January 2018 for routes to London and North American destinations.

The aircraft lessor currently holds two of the eight triple seven fleet of the airline in an agreement sealed in New York in 2013.

  1. And London Heathrow is about to see a Boeing 777 soon...

  2. They'll now have 10 777s just like Garuda (their benchmark for five star service) and Kuwait Airways. We'll be expecting these two 777s will have premium economy. Most likely the premium economy of this will also be the same on the A350. If so, they'll also have to reconfigure their other 8 777s.

  3. In addition to LHR, they also have the opportunity to use these two 777s on SYD, since the flight schedule is synchronized for SYD-MNL-LHR kangaroo route. This will make the product competitive with other airlines.

    1. If I am not mistaken, PAL intends to use the reconfigured A330-300 to Australia in the second half of 2017 as they become available. Which is also, a great improvement compared to their current setup.

I think it will still be a competitive product, both being new and all, despite using another aircraft.

  4. PAL should opt to deploy these new 777s for their CEB-LAX route with the premium economy class included.

    1. Amen. CEB-LAX also needs more capacity particularly for the December-January holiday season. This will greatly help decongest NAIA as passengers heading to VisMin from SoCal can just go directly to CEB and connect from there.

  6. I did notice a lot of people commenting here in previous posts how they were disappointed in knowing that the two 777s delivered last year still don't have direct aisle access for business class. The reason for that is because PAL wants to maximize space utilization. Same configuration is also easier for cabin crew. If they choose different seats and configuration for these two additional 777s, and add premium economy, they will repeat what happened to their 747-400s back then: with three different configurations. If so, they'll have to quickly reconfigure their 8 existing 777s to make it standard. In the case of Garuda, their business class have all direct aisle access because theirs are newer, their Economy seats are in a more comfortable 3-3-3 layout, but downside is that they dont utilize much space and maximize profitability. Look at them now, their profits just dropped 89% last year. Cost cutting is now also becoming obvious in their first class. Also, they have two configurations for their 777s because they deploy them to different markets. The two-class 777 is sent to the middle East, while the three-class 777 with first class is sent to AMS, LHR, DPS-NRT, and soon NRT-LAX. In the case of PAL, they send the 777s almost exclusively to US/Canada and soon, LHR. And both US/Canada/LHR services are the same for business and economy.

    1. That would be the job of the 3rd A350. All A350s has eastern seaboard of North America as destinations.

    2. Agreed. When PAL introduced B777 to Toronto, only eastbound can fly nonstop and a stop in Vancouver way back. We can only determine only if a 278 tonne A350-941 XWB can fly nonstop in both sides of the cities. To be honest, still I don't know what is the range of a 278 tonne A350-941 until now.

    3. Actually the B777 plane can fly back to MNL without the stop if it controls its belly in the same way that CX does. But typical Filipinos doesn't like that idea.
