PAL Announced Engine Choice For A321NEO

10 November 2015

Philippine Airlines (PAL) has officially announced the engine of choice to power a fleet of 15 new generation Airbus A321NEO slated for delivery starting 2017. (see our earlier unconfirmed reports here)

PAL selected PurePower PW1135G-JM geared turbo-fan (GTF) engines from Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of Cincinnati-based United Technologies Corp.

"The A320neo equipped with our our Geared Turbofan™ (GTF)engine technology will set a new standard for narrow body efficiency and economics." says Pratt & Whitney President Paul Adams.

The GTF architecture has so far demonstrated additional 2 percent fuel burn enhancement from the original 15% fuel burn and CO2 emissions reduction claims which further reinforce the A321neo's 25 percent fuel burn savings claim by the engine manufacturer before 2020.

Pratt & Whitney has completed already 11,000 hours of testing across the PurePower engine family, including 23,000 cycles of testing.

The first PW1100G-JM engine was tested in November 2012, less than two years after the GTF program was launched. It will first enter commercial service with Qatar Airways by the end of this month.
