PAL Connects Borongan to Manila and Cebu

PAL Re-Links Borongan to Rest of the Philippines

20 December 2022

Flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) has introduced another island hopping route, reminiscent of the early years of the airline, as it launches flight from Manila to Borongan via Mactan on 86 seater DHC9-400NG aircraft.

PR 2651 will fly twice a week from Manila every Monday and Friday leaving at 8:55am, arriving Cebu at 10:20am, and thereafter arriving Borongan airport at 12 noon.

PR2652 will depart Borongan at 12:30pm arriving Cebu at 1:30pm and Manila at 4:50pm. Manila-Cebu leg will be service by Airbus A320 aircraft.

The airline offers multiple connections from Cebu to Manila, and other major cities in the Philippines.

Previously, travelers to the capital of Eastern Samar province have to land at Tacloban Airport and take a five- to a six-hour land trip to reach Borongan City. The other option is to travel by land from Manila, which takes about two days.

The airline was the first commercial airline to launch a regular flight to Borongan after the local airport’s completion in March 2013.  However flights was suspended 8 months later due to damages of airport infrastructure caused by typhoon Yolanda on November 2013.

Initial talks for the reopening of the flight started in July 2022 culminating with Borongan City Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda and PAL President and Chief Operating Officer Capt. Stanley Ng signing a memorandum of agreement to restart flight operations.

PAL Bumps Plenty of Pax Due Plane Downgrade To TWT

12 December 2022

Flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) has bumped off number of passengers after it began downgrading service between Cotabato-Sanga Sanga flight in Tawi-Tawi from jet to turboprop plane, it was learned.

PAL has downgraded PR2487/88 from 180 seater Airbus A320 to 76 seater Bombardier DHC-8-400 (Q-400) beginning December 1.

“I queued ahead of many of them but they were the ones who were processed first for boarding,” said Nurosalam Caladtiag, one of the passengers who were denied boarding last Thursday.

The airline operates twice a week service from Cotabato to Tawi-Tawi and vice versa every Monday and Thursday.

“It was unfair for solo travelers who lined up first only to be left behind,” he added.

Another passenger remarked that  PAL knew the airline to be overbooked after it began calling for volunteers not to fly that day.

“They knew they overbooked because they spoke through the PA system four or five times saying that the flight is overbooked and that they were looking for volunteers to give up their seats,” Dr. Jose Jowel Canuday,  Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology of the Ateneo de Manila University said.

A ground personnel of the airline who wants her name withheld disclosed that this was not the first time that passengers were denied boarding since PAL downgraded flight services to Cotabato, as it declined twelve others in the first day and twenty others last Monday, and nine Thursday.

Affected passengers were rerouted to Zamboanga, or were given priority boarding on the next available flights the next week.

PAL personnel at Sanga Sanga Airport laments that even that arrangement is questionable as succeeding flights are also overbooked, as none of all the passengers contacted after the service downgrade, manifested intent to reschedule their flights.

“We are contacting all of them, none has rescheduled their flight or accepted flight diversion to Zamboanga. They are not also accepting refund as they want to travel on that date.” she adds.

PAL said it intends to add a third flight next year between Cebu and Cotabato and Tawi-Tawi, to address the growing traffic between the BARMM region.

PAL To Restore Perth, Auckland Next

Flight Restarts 27 March

8 December 2022

Flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) has announced the resumption of flight to Perth beginning March 27, and will operate three flights a week using an Airbus A321neo, with 12 business class seats and 156 economy seats.

It will depart Manila at 12.05 am, arriving in Perth at 7.15 am and the return flight will leave Perth at 8.30 am and land in Manila at 3.50 pm.

The flight to Perth was first flown in 2013 via Airbus A320 aircraft after briefly serving it via Darwin due to range issues. The route was abandon six months later due to poor loads.

The return to Perth marks an end to a decade-long absence from the Western Territory.

Earlier plans to recommence the service back in 2019 was scheduled, with a tentative launch date in late March 2020. However, the Covid19 pandemic suspended its resumption as a result of the pandemic which imposed multiple travel restrictions across the globe, and also causing the airline to apply for bankruptcy protection in the United States and the Philippines.

Meanwhile, PAL intends to resume Auckland also by the first quarter of next year. Flight schedules is expected to be announce soon.
