PAL Returns To New York

After a nearly 18-year hiatus, Philippine Airlines has restored service between Manila and New York City this time flying four times per week between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and Manila instead of flying Newark, with the same stop over in Vancouver each way.

New York services was resumed on March 15, with Boeing 777-300ER (RP-C7772) plane used for inaugural flight instead of the usual Airbus A340-300 considering the number of passengers that booked for the flight which reached more than 300.

Flight services was halted to New York in 1997 at the height of the Asian Financial Crisis. It is Philippine Airlines’ longest route. Anna Aero

  1. I'm glad PAL chose to use its flagship 777 on this inaugural flight instead of the A340. I hope that this is a sign that NY will see the 777 again in the future. I REALLY hope that PAL is planning to get more of them. Or maybe the A350. Or the Dreamliner.

Speaking of which, I wonder how PAL's longhaul orders are going.

  2. I don't know why JFK gets the A340 while Toronto gets the 777-300ER. Are there more passengers flying to Toronto than New York? I always felt New York is more of a premium market compared to Toronto.

    1. As far as I know the A340 is also used on Toronto now. It's LA and SF which get the 777. What PAL needs is more 777s, even leased if necessary, as well as 787s and/or A350s.

    2. 777 was for inaugural flight only and resumed its planned A340 service to JFK... the leased ex-IB 340 are only temporary stop gap till the arrival of long haul wide bodies.

    3. What longhaul widebodies? The A330's? Not enough and lets not mention the range difference.

    1. Didn't they apply for Oneworld membership a few years ago?

Maybe they should try Star Alliance. They already have a partnership with ANA. It shouldn't be too hard.

    2. Star is already saturated with Southeast Asian Carriers. Too much competition with Singapore and Thai. Skyteam has Garuda and Vietnam Airlines. Either Oneworld or just remain unaligned would be the best option.

    4. Don't forget Oneworld has MH as its sole ASEAN member.

  5. Let's see how long will this last. Their LHR is now struggling and can't keep up with competition. I'll be flying to NYC this June and didn't bother to check PAL. I want world class service and a new plane to take me to the Big Apple. Am happy with my decision to book with Asiana. Sorry, but patriotism wont get me to buy tickets from PAL.

    1. USA-MNL route is price sensitive market whether it's a direct or non direct flight...PAL needs to adjust it's airfares frequently to have a full load of pax n accommodate balikbayan boxes
