Zamboanga Airport Opens International Gateway in December

12 October 2019

Zamboanga Airport is set to open its international gateway first week of December as 45 Million pesos expansion project completes construction of its immigration, customs, and quarantine (ICQ) facilities this year.

Department of Transportation (DOTR) originally set the project for completion in December 2017 but due to delays in the procurement of security equipment, computers, and electronic passport machines pushed the completion of the project for two more years.

The airport is expected to service three international flights.

Meanwhile, the 202 million pesos runway strip grading and asphalt overlay is set for completion and acceptance this month while repair of the east taxiway is set for completion next year.

KOTA KINABALU: Philippine Airlines (PAL) will begin its thrice-weekly flights from Zamboanga to the state capital here starting March 31,2020.

The introduction of the route is seen as good news for the business community, trading fraternity and leisure travellers, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Christina Liew.

"I have been looking forward to this inaugural PAL flight from Zamboanga to Kota Kinabalu since the proposal was made last year, when a delegation from PAL paid a courtesy call to me.

"The move is timely as it ties in well with Visit Malaysia Year 2020," said the state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister in a statement on Tuesday (Oct 29).

PAL will be using the 86-seater Bombardier Q400 aircraft for the route.

Earlier, Liew received a courtesy call from the BIMP-EAGA Malaysia Business Council (BEBC) Sabah chapter.

She commended the state chapter for its initiative and persistence to ensure that the inaugural flight becomes a reality.

Liew added that the aircraft will be given a water salute upon arrival at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) on March 31, while the passengers of the maiden flight will be given a traditional welcome by the Sabah Tourism Board's cultural troupe.

  2. @philippineairspace - Do you know what these 'three (3) international flights'? Is this the one from PALExpress to Kota Kinabalu?

How about CebGo's planned Sandakan route? Will it push through now the ICQ facilities are already in place.

And lastly, are there any foreign carriers (like MASWings) who signified their intentions of opening a flight to Zamboanga?

    Thanks @philippineairspace!
