New York on March 15

1 September 2014

Philippine Airlines has officially announced that it will begin flights to New York beginning March 15, 2015 four times a week initially with A340-300 aircraft. The flight route to New York will be via Vancouver in Canada, the same route the airline last flew in 1997. It will however be the first time for the flag carrier to fly to New York's John F. Kennedy airport as it docks at Terminal 1. This story was first reported on this blog on April 11, 2014. You can read the story here. Special thanks to the contributors.

  1. Itll be awesome to hear PAL announce this soon. If the reason why PAL is replacing the B777 to A340 for the London Route for the launch New York then I see why. But other than that, wrong decisions are made.

  2. Why would an A340 will operate the flight?

  3. it's a redeye flight from YVR to JFK! Is that the best you can do PAL?

    1. Talino naman ng mga tao dito... Natural magkakaroon ng overnight flight! Halos kalahati ng planeta lalakbayin mo! May pa redeye redeye pa!

    2. Its actually a morning arrival and deprture flight at JFK which is better. The airline applied for afternoon arrivals and departures but settled for AM slots after failing to secure a gate at JFK in the afternoon. It would have provided YVR a midday flight to JFK. Now it competes with CX and DL all with AM arrival times. Thus also the reason for the equipment downgrade.

    3. What's the advantage of a morning arrival/departure as opposed to night/afternoon?

  5. I hope they can upgrade their seat with IFE monitors or put their latest PAL on-air wifi wireless IFE (which is installed on their newer 230t A330's) on their leased A340 aircraft. No IFE in A340 means 12 hours of doing nothing in your seat except to eat their boring meals in the boring aircraft. If that happens many filipinos will still ride their asian rivals Cathay, Eva and Korean, which they using their A380 in Incheon-JFK route, with the price that is reasonably fair to the passengers.

    1. Hopefully, by the time they start serving NY, they would have already leased/bought newer aircraft with modern IFE. Perhaps that's the reason they've delayed their NY service from October to March.

  6. Its ok flying with old a340 basta comfortable yong chair at may ife, wifi at usb port pang charge ng gadgets ok na yon.

  7. ^^The problem is yung A340 parang barebone lang kumbaga. Wala IFE, Wi-Fi at most likely, wala power port.

  8. I flew with PAL to LAX with the 340 on economy, there's mainscreen and they're lending iPads to the passengers for free. Seat was fine it was still the bulky soft one so it's perfect for sleeping :))

  9. Joining alliances would help PAL's expansion as it should help feed the flight...Star, Oneworld or Skyteam

    1. If that so will happen, I would want PAL to join oneworld.

    2. They can't just join even if they want to. They must be invited to join, and believe me no alliance cares for PAL at all. They bring nothing to the table!

    3. Dont forget, PAL has bigtime Oneworld members that they currently have codeshare agreements with, namely: Malaysia Airlines and Cathay Pacific. I saw an article before that Cathay is helping PAL upgrading ticketing system to Oneworld standards. Ang you know RSA, you dont know what is PAL's next move.

    4. Just because they have codeshares mean jack sh*t. They codeshare because they need these other airlines, but these airlines don't need PAL at all. CX & MH don't put their codes on any PAL flight, it's the other way around.

  10. Oneworld needs another ASEAN airline like PAL in order to have two ASEAN airlines in each alliance - Star has SQ & TG, Sky has GA & VN while Oneworld has only MH in the alliance.

    1. The only way for them to be in an alliance is if they get invited by the members. No one wants PAL because they offer all of the alliances nothing in terms of network, connectivity, an efficient hub, not to mention a premium frequent flyer market. And just because other alliances have two ASEAN members means nothing to Oneworld. They've got this region covered very well. And it's not at all rosy over at Star as SQ is known to hate TG's presence and vice versa.

    2. PAL should not join in three biggest airline alliance. PAL should be independent.

  11. Confirmed!!! Pal on the process of leasing boeing 777-200LR (from el-al daw?!)

    1. I wish PAL will order 777LR's for non-stop flights to USA & Europe.

    2. Thats a good news but wait, does pal carry on board missiles from el al israeli airlines?

    3. LY doesn't have any 77Ls...they have 77Es...

    4. Where did this come from? show some proof! and El Al doesnt have LR's... Maybe ER's

    5. Might be boeing 777-200ER not LR. I used to fly el al twice . Very strict and indiscriminating to non jewish passengers.they will treat you like a potential terrorist.but the service same with pal . Both are 3 stars.

  12. EL-AL does not have 777-200LR's. The only carries that have it if I recall correctly are: Air Austral, Air Canada, Delta, Emirates, Etihad, Ethiopian, Pakistan, Qatar, Turkmenistan. If they are looking at the 777X, they should look at the 777-8X. Passenger capacity similar to the -300ER but with the range similar to the -200LR.

  13. Air india is leasing their 777-200LR. most probably its air india not EL AL.

  14. PR might as well lease from GECAS. Napaka poor condition yung mya -200LR's ng Air India nakupo. Open pa ata ling ng 777-200LR manufacturing so if they plan to get new ones, they can get it quickly and cabin amenities similar to the current -300ERs that they already have.

    1. How long would it take, though, for PAL to get new 777s from GECAS? I mean, if they order right now, will they get one in time for the NY inaugural flight?

  15. Philippine Airlines should equip mainscreen television and WiFi for their Airbus A340-300, together with Airbus A330-300 and A321, if they cannot afford personal screens. At least they provide simple but good IFE system. Passengers should bring their own gadget for WiFi access, or watch good movies using mainscreen television. Some legacy airlines doesn't have personal screens on their certain aircraft, but they provide mainscreen televisions and WiFi.

Besides, buying personal screens is not a joke. It should be purchased in high price for each.
