PPS Terminal Opens May 3

The Transport Department (DOTr) will inaugurate the new Puerto Princesa International Airport Terminal Project on May 3, 2017.

The new $185 million Korean Export Import Bank (KEXIM) funded passenger terminal building (PTB) with ICQ facility was designed to accommodate 1.9 million passengers annually but could handle up to 5 million per annum. It has a floor area of 13,000 square meter as compared to the existing terminal with 2,400 sqm of floor space. Construction started August of 2014.

The airport expansion project costs $102.56 million while its PTB design and build contract, awarded to Korean group Kumho Industrial Co. Ltd.-GS Engineering and Construction joint venture, was worth $82.9 million, according to the Department of Transport (DOTr).

Development cost includes the construction of a new passenger, cargo, ARFF, control tower, admin, engineering and other support buildings, runway and strip upgrade, new apron and taxiways and provision for new navigation facilities designed for eventual expansion the international airport’s capacity with use of heavy aircraft to address growing air traffic consistent with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards on airside infrastructures.

Puerto Princesa International Airport is one of the gateway airports for the Philippines that handled 1,644,003 passengers in 2016. It also handles 1.2 million tourists in 2016.

  1. Strange that the new PPS terminal does not have jetbridges, while the new Caticlan terminal and the future Panglao and new General Santos terminals will have jetbridges. Considering this will be an international airport. I wonder why they opted for that? What will happen to the old terminal? I had childhood memories there just like the old Lumbia terminal.

    1. Because its cheaper. Most of the airline operators are also LCCs. Don't worry three finger bridge is already in the plan when phase II kicks in within the next 10 years.

    2. And i think they try to maximize the aprons capacity of 4-6 aircraft (maybe a mix of a320,321 and 330) and bridges i think is somewhat limits the number of aircraft due to its specific spacing. So they are on the process of studiying it.

    1. Yes. PAL used to sometimes fly A330s there. When I visited Palawan several years ago we flew on an A330.

  6. So far, the international flights operating out of PPS is ICN, TPE (not sure if it still operates since the flight can't be seen in PAL's timetable anymore) and PUS all serviced by Philippine Airlines.

    An article report states that Hainan Airlines will fly from Hainan province in China to PPS but it did not operate until now or it is just one charter flight.

    As for the old terminal, earlier reports states that it will be transferred to PAF but until now, no actions has been taken and PAF still uses the old airbase for military operations. Recently, Palawan News reported that AirAsia may use the old apron of the old terminal if they will to develop their hub in PPS as the old apron is still in good condition and can park 3-5 A320 aircraft.
